The bpf Professional Membership provides newly-qualified and experienced therapists with practical support and opportunities for their career.

Professional Membership benefits

Registration with the British Psychoanalytic Council;

Networking with other qualified professionals online via our forum and specialist groups;

Access to broad expertise through our three specialist associations: British Jungian Analytic Association (BJAA), Independent Psychoanalytic Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy Association (IPCAPA) and thePsychoanalytic Psychotherapy Association (PPA);

Attend bpf events to fulfil annual CPD requirements;

Free listing in the bpf Find a therapist directory, with patient referrals from the bpf;

Academic resources: access our vast collection of online journals or try one of the nine other institutions we’re partnered with including: the Institute of Psychoanalysis, the Institute of Group Analysis, Society of Analytical Psychology, the Anna Freud Centre

Advice: guidance about professional practicalities of running a practice from the bpf team;

Advice for applying for other accreditations: three associations are part of the bpf: Independent Psychoanalytic Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy Association (IPCAPA), British Jungian Analytic Association (BJAA); the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Association (PPA). All professional members can apply to the relevant organisation, in addition to their bpf membership, to demonstrate professional commitment.

Find an experienced supervisor via our internal members’ directory, or sign-up to mentor other bpf members.

Become a Professional Member

Entry requirements

A minimum of four years’ study and a recognised professional qualification in psychotherapy, plus clinical experience is required;

Application process

Applicants are assessed individually by a member of the bpf team. Applications take five to ten working days to process. Applicants may be contacted for an interview as part of the application process.

Location

Professional Membership is available to UK residents and students visas only. International applicants are assessed on a case-by-case basis.
